Lakes
& Bay Communications freelance agency supplies news and features
for newspapers, magazines, radio and television. Its area stretches
from Morecambe around the Furness Peninsula and takes in the South
Lake District Area, as far North as Keswick, and the conurbations
of Barrow, Lancaster and Kendal, although commissions would be
accepted from further afield.
In recent years this part of the world has been highlighted during
the Foot and Mouth outbreak, England’s worst ever Legionnaires
Disease outbreak in Barrow, the cockle-pickers’ disaster
on Morecambe Bay sands, the runaway railway wagon tragedy at Shap,
the derailment at Grayrigg and so on. Although these events and
others received extensive national, and indeed international,
exposure, most media outlets struggled to find adequate local
coverage and follow-through which took the stories to their conclusion.
Then there are issues like second home-owners, the decline of
the English countryside, the foxhunting ban debate, property price
fluctuations and the effect they have on the community, and an
explosion in locally-produced food and drink. Oh, and there is
the little matter of the British Nuclear Fuels establishments
round the corner at Sellafield.
And that is only the headline news. Most of the time the quirky,
literate and highly qualified people who populate this most beautiful
corner of England are a constant source of features, challenges,
world records and all the other fodder of interesting copy. Culture,
heritage, entertainment and food and drink are rich sources of
material. The glossy magazine market is particularly buoyant.
Rates will be by negotiation on either a commission or daily fee,
